What is a spay?
A spay is when the reproductive organs of a female dog
or cat is surgically removed by a qualified veterinarian.
The organs that are removed are the uterus or womb and
the ovaries. This is to ensure that the dog or cat does not
go into heat and get pregnant.
Reasons to spay your female dog or cat:
1. Too many strays: right now, Trinidad and Tobago has
too many stray dogs and cats. They reproduce and create
more animals on the street. These animals suffer, starve,
are beaten and injured. There are currently not enough
homes for these animals. Spays save strays.
2. Lower risk of ovarian cancer
3. The dog or cat leads a healthier, longer life. Repeated
pregnancies can stress out an animal and cause them to be
subjected to health risks.
4. A ONE TIME SURGERY, once this surgery is
performed, the owner does not have to worry about pups
and kittens.
5. The animal will not go into heat, that means no male
dogs jumping the fence to get at the female and the
female does not have to be chained or locked up to avoid
pregnancy.
A neuter is where the male's testicles are surgically
removed by a qualified veterinarian.
Reasons to neuter:
1. The male cannot impregnate any females
2. Reduces aggression
3. Reduces the risk of testicular cancer
4. Reduces the need for the male to be urinating all over
the place to mark his territory
5. Reduces the need for the male to roam and leave home
looking for females to mate
